Vacuum Food Storage

Vacuum food storage is the latest and the greatest when discussing the aspects of overall food storage. These handy little contraptions remove any air that would become enclosed in the bag. Thus, eliminating the one single thing that is the worst destroyer of foodstuffs. Lets discuss this air factor for a moment before continuing.

Air is the problem that most, if not all storage bags have. It is this air that causes foodstuffs to go bad but generating the ability of bacteria to breathe thus, increasing mold. This refrigerator science project, as most like to refer to it as, can be eliminated simply by removing the air out of the ration. However, most food storage bags that are on the market today do not solve this dilemma. Although, there are a couple of specific brands that do make every attempt to keep the air out and their products are quite good however, they do not work as well as vacuum packing does.

Vacuum packing has a few advantages when compared to the standard wrapping or bagging of food for storage. Vacuum packing increases food freshness dates thus, keeping food tasting fresher longer. Foods that are vacuum packed stay up to five times longer than the conventional storage methods. This can be a great motivator for saving money in the overall food bill.

There are a few other aspects that can be contributing factors when deciding which storage route to take. These vacuum packages can be proportioned and can also contain a marinating mixture that will gradually soak flavors into the product without letting air get in to dry them out. By keeping the air out, these also keep other odors and possible flavor destroyers from infiltrating the food.

A downfall of these vacuum packed type of food storage methods is the fact that one does need the unit that removes the air and seals the bag. This can be a bit of a deterrent to many people. It is the time element of creating the bags that most people find hard to overcome. Time is probably the one single item that everyone could use more of but never is able to achieve. Basically, these units are treated like any other kitchen appliance. Most are shoved into a cupboard to only return when absolutely required. That is where most people would need to get the motivation to continue with the vacuum sealing. However, it seems easier in most eyes to simply put the product into a baggie and forget about it. This is the beginning of the so called refrigerator science project, also known as the mold.

However, if one can overcome the lazy factor that seems to imped the use of a sealing machine then, by all means, vacuum food storage is the way to go. One last thing when discussing these little appliances, they also work well for compacting items to go into storage too.
